Life Science  6th– 7th Grade

Instructor: Kate Vandecar

Tuesdays: 8:30 – 9:55 a.m.

This class will include such topics as introduction to cell biology, protein synthesis, photosynthesis, genetics, origins, and ecology. We will also cover classification and will conduct a brief survey of the kingdoms including archaebacteria, eubacteria, protists, fungi, plants, and animals including; invertebrates and vertebrates. A brief study of some of the systems of the human body is also included. Students will complete 27 labs in this class, have 2 practicum assessments and complete a science fair project!

This course meets weekly for 90 minutes (45 min. of lecture, 45 min. of lab). Weekly homework assignments from the textbook, lab pages and handouts will be completed by the students at home each week. Tests will be taken online.

Marine Biology  4th– 6th Grade

Instructor: Kate Vandecar

Tuesdays: 11:00 – 11:55 a.m.

During this year long courses students will have 30 minutes of lecture and 30 minutes of lab weekly. There will be eight cumulative tests at the end of each module. Students will be expected to assist with 5 marine dissections throughout the school year along with tracking of a marine mammal. At the end of the school year the class will be going on a field trip to Dana Point for a two hour Living Lab aboard a Marine vessel.

Topics covered in class: Ocean volume, Origins, Oceans and Continents, Plate Tectonics, Seafloor features, Classification of Marine Life, Photosynthetic Organisms, Marine Plankton and their habitat, Corals and Coral Reef Ecosystems, Introduction to Marine Ecology, Organization of Communities, Interactions of species, Consumers/Producers, Adaptations, Keystone Predators.

Biology  9th– 10th grade level

Tuesdays: 2:00 – 3:30 p.m.

This class will include such topics as intro. chemistry, cell biology, protein synthesis, photosynthesis, thorough coverage of genetics, classification and a survey of the kingdoms including archeabacteria, eubacteria, protists, fungi, plants and animals including invertebrates, arthropods and vertebrates. There will be 1-2 long-term projects. Students will complete 28 labs and 2 in-class practicum assessments in this class.

This course meets weekly for 2.5 hours (1+ hour of lecture, 1+ hour of lab). Weekly homework assignments from the textbook, lab reports and handouts will be completed by the students at home each week. Tests are taken online. Two in-class practicum tests will be given by the instructor.
