ONLINE ONLY COURSES
LOCATION/INFORMATION: These classes are ONLINE ONLY via Zoom. An access link will be provided by the instructor to all registered students prior to the first day of class. Students will log on and follow the instructor for a lecture and a lab presentation. All lab worksheets will be accessed via Google Classroom. Parents will be required to purchase lab supplies independently in advance. A supply list will be provided as well as links to vendors to purchase the items. These classes will always be ONLINE ONLY. These are classes that are taking place live at one of our learning centers and are also available to online students via Zoom. CALENDAR:Â Class instruction begins August 31st, 2023 with 1st Semester ending December 14th. Second Semester starts January 11th and ends May 9th, 2024.Â
There will be no classes on the following dates: Nov 20 – 24, Dec 18 – Dec 31, 2023; Jan 1 – Jan 5, Feb 19 – 23, Mar 25 – Apr 5, 2024.

Earth & Space Science 8th $425
This course is for older Jr High students (8th). We will cover material in the following areas: stars and planets, the sun, asteroids, comets, meteors, The Space Program, weather, rocks and minerals, fossils, mountain formation, volcanoes, earthquakes, erosion, glaciers, and more! Each week will have a live lecture and hands-on lab. Textbook reading, homework questions, lab paperwork, and tests will be completed by the student at home. A science fair project will be completed by each student during 2nd semester. A field trip will also be offered.

Life Science 7th $425
This course is for Jr High students (preferably 7th) and is introductory to the life sciences. We will cover cells, genetics, mitosis/meiosis, photosynthesis, protein synthesis, respiration, the 6 kingdoms, and human anatomy. Each week will have a live lecture and hands-on lab. Textbook reading, homework questions, lab paperwork, and tests will be completed by the student at home. A science fair project will also be completed by each student during 2nd semester. A field trip may be offered.

Marine Science 6th $425
This class will introduce your student to the beauty of our oceans and the organisms that live in them. We will also focus on some local creatures that live here on our beaches, including the California grunion which lays its eggs in the sand! It will cover topics such as Intro to oceanography, marine habitats (coral reefs, tide pools, kelp forests, sandy beaches, etc.), and marine organisms. Some dissections will be performed in this class. This class will include weekly homework, review, lecture, and hands-on lab with 1-2 field trips. A Shark project will also be completed by each student during 2nd semester.

Physical Science 8 - 9th
$450
This course may be for late Jr High or early High School (8th-9th) and is an a-g level physical science class that meets once a week for 90 minutes. The class meets for 30 weeks per year (15 weeks/semester). Students will have weekly live lectures and hands-on labs. Reading, lab homework, and testing will be completed online at home. There will be 1 self-directed project, 1 science fair project, and 1 research paper in addition to the regular class work. The course introduces concepts in chemistry and physics. Subjects covered will include the scientific method, metrics and conversions, matter, atomic structure and chemical bonding, and properties of matter as well as energy and motion, acceleration and momentum, Newton’s laws, and the gas laws. A unit on the electromagnetic spectrum including focused material on sound and light will be covered. A unit of electricity, magnetism, and energy sources will conclude our study. All lab supplies are provided when students are in person. Supplies will not be provided for online classes. A supply list will be available prior to the beginning of school.

Biology 9 - 10th $475
This a-g level biology class meets once a week for 2 hours (1 hour of lecture, 1 hour of lab). The class meets for 30 weeks per year (15 weeks/semester). Students will have weekly live lectures and hands-on labs. Reading, labs, and testing will be completed online at home with the exception of two in-class practicum exams. The course covers the top concepts in biology including a brief overview of chemistry in the body, then onto a thorough investigation of cells, protein synthesis, cellular respiration, and photosynthesis. Mendelian genetics is covered with labs focused on how blood types are inherited followed by a unit on origins. A complete survey of the 3 domains and 6 kingdoms is filled with dissections of various representative specimens and is followed by a unit of ecology. A unit on human anatomy finishes up the course. Supplies will not be provided for online classes. A supply list will be available prior to the beginning of school.
