SCIENCE-2-U 2022-2023 CLASSES AT PCLC

CALENDAR: Mandatory orientation August 23-25th. Class instruction begins August 30th, 2022 with 1st Semester ending December 15th. Second Semester starts January 10th and ends May 11th, 2022. 

There will be no classes on the following dates: Nov 21 – 25, Dec 16 – Dec 31, 2022;  Jan 1 – Jan 6, Feb 20 – 24, Apr 3 – Apr 14, 2023.

ELEMENTARY CLASSES $280* PER SEMESTER

Hands-on science classes for K-5th grade. The subject of study changes monthly with a mix of physical and life science courses.

Earth Science 6-8th

This course is for Jr High students (6th-8th). We will cover material in the following areas: stars and planets, the sun, asteroids, comets, meteors, The Space Program, weather, rocks and minerals, fossils, mountain formation, volcanoes, earthquakes, erosion, glaciers and more! Each week will have a live lecture and hands on lab. Textbook reading, homework questions, lab paperwork and tests will be completed by the student at home. A science fair project will be completed by each student during 2nd semester. A field trip will also be offered.quakes, erosion, glaciers and more!

EARTH SCIENCE

Life Science 6-8th

This course is for Jr High students (6th-8th) and is an introductory to the life sciences. We will cover cells, genetics, mitosis/meiosis, photosynthesis, protein synthesis, respiration, the 6 kingdoms and human anatomy. Each week will have a live lecture and hands on lab. Textbook reading, homework questions, lab paperwork and tests will be completed by the student at home. A science fair project will also be completed by each student during 2nd semester. A field trip may be offered.

LIFE SCIENCE

Marine Science 6-7th

This class will introduce your student to the beauty of our oceans and the organisms that live in them. We will also focus on some local creatures that live here on our beaches, including the California grunion which lays its eggs in the sand! It will cover topics such as: Intro to oceanography, marine habitats (coral reefs, tide pools, kelp forest, sandy beaches, etc.), and marine organisms. Some dissections will be performed in this class. This class will include weekly homework, review, lecture, and hands-on lab with 1-2 field trips. A Shark project will also be completed by each student during 2nd semester.

MARINE SCIENCE

HIGH SCHOOL CLASSES $400 - $500* PER SEMESTER

Physical Science 8 - 9th $400

This course may be for late Jr High or early High School (8th-9th) and is an introduction to chemistry and physics. It is highly recommended that students take this class prior to high school chemistry and physics. A basic understanding of algebra (how to solve for one unknown) is required. We will cover the scientific method, measurements, energy and motion, the nature of matter, atomic structure and the periodic table, elements and their properties and interactions of matter like chemical reactions. Waves, light and sound will be covered followed by electricity and magnetism. Each week will have a live lecture and hands on lab. Textbook reading, homework questions, lab write ups and tests will be completed by the student at home. A science fair project will also be completed by each student during 2nd semester. Supplies will not be provided for online classes. A supply list will be available by July 26th on our website.

PHYSICAL SCIENCE

Forensic Science 9 - 12th
$425 1 SEMESTER ONLY

Forensic Science (9-12th grades) is a one-semester elective (available either semester) that will consist of weekly lectures, homework, review, and labs. Students will study the science of crime scene investigation. Topics included: scene of the crime, evidence, blood splatter patterns, blood factors, forgery, autopsy, forensic entomology, botany and odontology. This course will include a focus on careers related to crime scene investigation. Each week will have a live lecture and hands-on lab. Weekly homework assignments from the textbook and lab paperwork will be completed by students at home. Tests will be taken online at home and will be administered by a parent/guardian.
**Please note that this elective is only for one semester. This class may be taken with Health For High School, taught in the second semester, to have a full year of science or as an independent one-semester class.**

FORENSIC SCIENCE 

Health For High School
9 - 12th $425
1 SEMESTER ONLY

Health for High School is a one-semester elective (taught 2nd semester only) that fulfills the High School health requirement for California. The class will include lecture, video, discussion, and weekly activities or labs. In this course, we will respect the parents’ right to teach some sensitive subjects at home. The following subjects will be covered: Understanding health and wellness, taking charge of your health, achieving mental and emotional health, managing stress, healthy relationships, nutrition and physical fitness, reproduction, education and the risks involved with tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs. Understanding and preventing communicable diseases including STDs such as HIV/AIDS. We will also cover safety and injury prevention, first aid, and CPR. Students will be able to earn certification for First aid and CPR for an additional cost of $50. All other materials for the class will be provided in person and through Google Classroom. 
**Please note that this elective is only for one semester. This class may be taken with Forensic Science, taught in the first semester, to have a full year of science or as an independent one-semester class.**

HEALTH FOR HIGH SCHOOL 

Biology 9 - 10th $450

This course is a high school level biology class. It meets a-g requirements. This class will include such topics as: intro to chemistry, cell biology, protein synthesis, photosynthesis, thorough coverage of genetics, ecology, classification, and a survey of the kingdoms including: archaebacteria, eubacteria, protista, fungi, plantae, and animalia. We will also study human anatomy prior to our field trip. Each week will have a live lecture and hands on lab. Textbook reading, homework questions, lab reports and tests will be completed by the student at home. One long term project and two practicum tests will also be included. A field trip to Southern California Health Sciences will be offered 2nd semester. Supplies will not be provided for online classes. A supply list will be available by July 26th on our website.

BIOLOGY
 

Chemistry 10 - 12th $500

This course is a high school level chemistry class. It meets a-g requirements.  Each week will have a live lecture and hands on lab. Weekly homework, lab reports and tests will be completed by the student at home. Topics include: The structure of an atom, elements of the periodic table, chemical bonding, molecular structure and reactivity, mole concepts and stoichiometry, gases, solutions, acids & bases, reaction rates and chemical equilibrium, redox reactions and electrochemistry, and introduction to biochemistry and organic chemistry. Supplies will not be provided for online classes. A supply list will be available by July 26th on our website.
Prerequisite: Completion of Algebra 1
